Placido Domingo received loud applause and some differing boos during his return to the operatic stage on Friday to play as Simon Boccanegra at La Scala following his cancer surgery.

”La Scala is always La Scala. There were one or two people ... They are entitled to their opinion”, said Domingo after his three-hour performance, in which he has fewer high notes compared to his popular tenor roles.

Domingo as well as the other cast in Giuseppe Verdi’s opera received warm applause from majority of the audience, showering the stage with carnations and whistling to express their appreciation.

”I think for most people it was a really lovely evening”, said Domingo.

”I really enjoyed it. He has a great voice”, said Venezuelan engineer Ana Pelucart.

Domingo had undergone surgery in New York last March to remove a malignant tumour from his colon.

Domingo, the last performer left of the renowned ‘Three Tenors’, said that he did not have a preference for tenor or baritone roles.

”I just love singing”, said Domingo backstage while holding a bunch of white and red carnations and dressed in a dark blue silk cloak for the last death scene.

Soprano Anja Harteros was given the loudest applause compared to other singers for her brilliant performance as Maria, daughter of Boccanegra.

Domingo is scheduled to sing in another five performances out of eight of Boccanegra in La Scala, which will end on 7 May.
